Stealth Insult: Matthew Wilson, the artist who painted the famous art for the first three versions of Bayushi Kachiko card painted kanji in the wall of the background of Kachiko's third version that reads "Uikku no baka" or "(John) Wick is an idiot" in Japanese. This is probably why he was never hired to do art for L5R until long after John Wick had left the company.
Robert Denton This is some ancient L5R history, here! The legends vary and there are certain things that I cannot verify. While I adore the mythology surrounding L5R's creation as much as I love the in-universe mythology, I don't really want to perpetuate things that may or may not be true. I also respect both Wilson and Wick so I don't want to appear as though I don't. However, the artwork at least is clear, so while I cannot speculate on what led up to it, I can at least explain what I know about the offense itself. The message is in the kanji on the doors for Kachiko's artwork. It reads (I am told), "Uikku no Baka." Apparently, Uikku refers to John Wick's persona in-universe as the Serene Prophet (you may remember Uikku's Prophecies). It is not his only avatar in the world, but it is a significant one as a "narrator" in-universe of what is going to happen (Uikku "foresaw" the fates of the Great Clans).Also important is the fact that Kachiko was based in part on John Wick's self-confessed ideal woman. In fact, Kachiko's name comes from "Kachi," which was a code word John Wick once claimed he used in high school to refer to a girl he thought was cute. John Wick's fondness for his Kachiko character is the subject of many gaming legends by itself.So basically, the words "John Wick is an idiot" appears on the artwork of his "ideal" Scorpion woman. Artwork that would later become iconic for the character, in fact.So you can see why this is an especially trenchant tale.
