"In my opinion, it was a combination of three major factors.

The first is the FFG lifecycle of LCGs. If you look at their games prior to 2020, most of their games last two to three years. The ones that lasted longer needed to be exceptional. The game simply did not have the sales or engagement metrics needed to boost it out of that model.

The second was Keyforge, and then Arkham Horror LCG. Keyforge was lightning in a bottle when it came out. The Keyforge app tracked over 1 million registered decks, which put a minimum sales at $10 million. If one out of 3 decks bought got registered, that is closer to $25 million. FFG is a $50m to $75m company annually, based on reports from the French trading companies that pass it around. That's a huge sales figure for them. Later, this became the money coming in from Arkham Horror LCG during the Pandemic Bump, when a two player coop game was just what the market needed. Keyforge and Arkham Horror LCG redefined how success could be measured at FFG.

The third is that FFG never planned for L5R to succeed, and wanted instead to control the IP and prevent a competitor. It has been revealed in interviews that John Zinser of AEG met with Steve Horvath of FFG at GenCon 2015 to discuss moving L5R into an LCG because it was struggling to stay profitable as a TCG with new supply chain challenges. Horvath argued that the best move for L5R was to sell it, and sell it to FFG. And we saw how that ended.

I have had a few behind the scenes discussions with people involved at various levels of this sale and the life of the game at FFG, but I hold those confidences highly. But the simplest way of putting it is that FFG / Asmodee North America thought they were buying something different and did not truly understand what they were buying. When the game re-launched in 2017, it was a mild success but not the generational success of either Keyforge or Arkham Horror LCG. As such, L5R LCG was never meant to last more than two and a half years. Now, L5R as an IP is worth more to Asmodee North America as a prevention of competition than as a direct but difficult income source.

This is not without hope, though. There are several people at FFG and the other Asmodee North America studios who love the IP. I would be surprised if there are not two or three L5R card games in some form of playtesting and design in-house at FFG. The RPG at Edge Studios is pretty much a "finished" product with the Scorpion book, but Champions of Rokugan was a moderate success - enough to were they may try to continue to try to grow a "hero"-focused game.

Frankly, FFG / ANA are not blind. They are on social media. They know that an L5R card game would have traction - but it would have to be EXCEPTIONAL to earn a place with the company's resources, and like all business, these are extremely uncertain times. Business seeks to maximize profits and minimize risk, so I would not expect anything new in the next two years - unless they have something have been working on for 6 years finally coming out."
